The exhibition Chernobyl: Memory of a Disaster by Italian photographer Pierpaolo Mittica is featured as part of the Siena Awards Festival this Autumn.
Chernobyl, published by GOST in 2024, is a document of the communities who inhabit and pass through the exclusion zone—an area covering approximately 2600 km2 around the site of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor disaster of 1986. Mittica first journeyed to Chernobyl in 2002, drawn like many to photograph the impact of the worst technological catastrophe of the modern era. He returned many times and rather than focusing on the ruins and relics, sought to tell the stories of those he encountered in this unique place. Read about the book here
The exhibition is at Visit Area Verde Camollia 85, located on Via del Romitorio in Siena, Italy until November 29 2026. Learn more here about how to plan a visit. There is also a presentation of the work on Saturday 17 October, book your place to join here
