Join us in Stuttgart, Germany this season for an exhibition by Valentin Goppel - Bless this Couch - featuring an artist talk between Valentin Goppel and Dr. Verena Jendrus on Thursday 23 July at 6.30pm.
In his documentary-artistic works, Valentin Goppel addresses broad social issues. Drawing on his own experiences, he explores the impact of human longings. In doing so, he questions the concept of objective truth within photography.
Since 2023, he has been traveling through the U.S. for his long-term project “False Prophet Radio,” without a fixed route. Beyond its political and social relevance, the project is deeply autobiographical: he sets out in search of a dreamt-of America that has become the projected link to a sense of familial alienation. He sets out alone—no longer a child, not quite an adult yet. On several journeys through the western United States, he explores his sense of rootlessness and, in doing so, paints a subjective picture of both individual and societal ambivalence toward reality, change, and the longings associated with them.
In 2022, Goppel was awarded the Leica Oskar Barnack Newcomer Award for his previous series, Zwischen den Jahren (Between the Years), also a GOST Book.
