A Passage Through Passages

Until 21 March 2020

Brunei Gallery, SOAS University of London

Liz Hingley, who recently published Sacred Shanghai with GOST,  has curated this exhibition of materials, which follow the remarkable transformation brought about by roads, cars and ideas of mobility and nation building in South Asia from around 1900.

Within little more than a century, automobility has colonised the world. ‘Mobility’ is now promoted as a panacea for economic and political woes. Roads are so inter-twined with our lives that they almost appear as ‘natural’ or at least as common sense. Then there is the question of climate change.

A Passage Through Passages is part of Roads and the Politics of Thought, a European Research Council funded, 5-year ethnographic study of road-building in South Asia led by Edward Simpson (SOAS) supporting an inter-disciplinary team of filmmakers, researchers, curators and administrators from five countries. www.roadsproject.net
